Up until 1999 I never really thought about the Marine Corps, but when my brother became a Marine, my knowledge of what they stand for greatly increased. I realize throughout the 20th Century, there has been many peace heroes. But where would these heroes be without the heroes behind the scenes maintaining the peace in which they live. The Marines have a greater responsibility than we can possibly fathom. They hold the essence of peace in their hands. With courage they defend the country they are called to serve. Many of us do not understand this calling, but we enjoy the benefits they provide. While we work our eight-hour days and go to a safe place of refuge called home, they are deployed from their home, family, and friends to a foreign country not always safe. They guard their post without question, putting their very lives on the line every day, all day. They provide a blanket of security for all of us to sleep under, yet during peace times we forget they are still there, guarding, keeping us safe from harm. During the 20th Century many wars were fought, from the Philippine-American War (1899-1902) to the Persian Gulf War (1991), the Marines were there serving and protection our nation. Marines have participated in all wars of the United States, being in most instances first, or among the first to fight. Thus, these people will always be stressed out because they wont be happy with themselves and will be pressured to lose weight. People who do not know the exact definition of anorexia probably look down at people with anorexia. These people believe that anorexia is a disgusting eating disorder and can be overcome easily. So they are annoyed with anorexic people who are suffering because they think that it is possible to recover from anorexia easily. However, that is not true. Sometimes if an extremely thin person walks by, some bystanders think That person is so skinny! They should gain weight because they Just look horrible! In reality though, it is really hard for anorexic people to overcome their eating disorder. It takes a lot of treatment, effort, and time. Thus, these bystanders do not even know the hardships that anorexic people have to go through but they say rude comments. With corporal punishment, parents are able to bring their children under control. There are certain children who can only be controlled through the use of the cane. Corporal punishment helps make children obedient, respectful, polite, etc. In the absence of corporal punishment, children likely go wild. Corporal punishment in school makes students take their studies seriously and also helps keep the students under control. Authorities are able to instill discipline in children through the use of corporal punishment in schools. It makes very recalcitrant and stubborn children submit to authority because they fear that if they don’t do the right thing they just might be whipped. The disadvantages of corporal punishment It can be very counterproductive in the sense that it can sometimes make children hardened and no longer afraid. To contrast this Muir uses loud percussive and climactic language tapping, deepening drumming and hollow thunder. Contrast is again evident when Muir extends on the catastrophic number of deaths and the abundance of new life it is compared to in the second stanza. Dead bodies piled on deck Muir proves that the souls that were killed during the war are now carelessly man-handled, but this also shows the mass destruction. In comparison, the second stanza poses a different approach, there is an optimistic and natural outlook given through Muirs use of language. He states that there were half a dozen colts meaning future generations have a supply of dutiful and loyal steeds to look after them. Muir describes technology and machinery as formidable and the only way to overcome them is for a new start. Swallowed its children quick this is the dark nature of Muir’s depiction of technology; he also describes it as dank sea-monsters crouched and waiting. His hatred towards the machinery is so intense that he relates to them as demon-like and threatening. However he suggests that with the atonement of mankind, the world can be saved, thanks to the heroic horses. The horses are labeled as fabulous steeds and knights regarding them as mythical forms of saviors. This notion ties in with the continuous relation to the Bible; for example he mentions that the destruction of the world only took seven days, similar to the theory that the world began in seven days. Loss is highlighted in stanza one, the loss of lives, machinery and any sound or motion at all: but stanza two explains the uplifting renewal of everything. Impenetrable sorrow shows that mourning one would have over a loved one, and in this case hundreds of thousands. In spite of this, stanza two mentions new life and friendships regained from the past archaic companionship that could pierce our hearts. This adds to the emotional attachment that mankind shares with the horses, almost like the unconditional love a parent shares with their child. The hard-working horses are also compared to the now, useless machinery, which was defunct long after the war. In stanza one the machinery was decaying let them rust, whereas the horses willingly offered free servitude, glorifying them even further. The Horses is a poem that portrays the theme of war and destruction brilliantly, and without the evident contrast that Muir expresses, the poem would not be as effective. The idea of the redemption of humanity is optimistic and pleasing, but it still conveys its message that humans should not abuse the use of technology. Avoid clichà ©s Your readers will switch off the moment you synergise an ecosystem. As soon as you leverage solutions to issues going forward, or, worse, exit a door not aligned with brand status, you are doing exactly what teenagers do when wearing the uniform of whatever subculture is cool this week. They are masking their individuality in an effort to conform. Clichà ©s are the calling cards of a mind that has stopped thinking for itself and is using thoughts that are off-the-shelf, one-size-fits-all, microwave-for-three-minutes-for-a-delicious-individual-meal. Clichà ©s are verbal clip-art, which means mediocrity. If you are familiar with seeing a word or phrase in print, don’t use it. 3. Use the right imagery We use imagery all the time, because it brings our prose to life and paints pictures in the mind. It also reveals a lot about a writer’s attitude. So, when my local health trust writes about delivering healthcare, I know that they think of healthcare as a commodity. Their language implies that the personal, human activity of caring is beneath their dignity and a long way from their thoughts. Try to use words that have literal, rather than abstract, meanings, and never forget what the word actually means. Try to picture it, and ask yourself if the picture makes sense. David Gillespie, author of the book Charisma, describes Bill Clinton as a man who does exactly what it says on the tin!; a horribly wonderful blend of mixed metaphor and clichà ©. Just try to picture it. 4. Write simple sentences Keep your sentences short and simple, but not so short that they become staccato. Keep the verb close to its subject, and always use a short word instead of a long one. When you come to cut your piece, as you almost certainly will, delete as many adjectives and adverbs as you can, starting with ‘ongoing’. 5. Use strong, active verbs Verbs are the engine of language. Nouns are the cargo; adjectives and adverbs the packaging. If you overload your prose with heavy nouns and drive them with weak verbs (‘to be’ is the weakest), then your writing will plod along like an old lady lugging twelve bags of shopping. Compare the sporting clichà © it’s a must-win game with we must win this game. The second sentence is so dynamic it almost demands an exclamation mark. Why? Compare the verbs: ‘is’ versus ‘must win’. Now compare the subjects: ‘it’ versus ‘we’. By saying ‘we’, the second speaker is taking responsibility by focusing on himself and his team, while the first speaker is looking at the game: a distant, abstract thing. The first speaker has turned the important thing – ‘must win’ – into a feeble adjective. The second speaker has made it the main verb. Above all, let your own personality come through.
