New Ways Students Can Explore Colleges Using Social Media
New Social Media Networks and Mobile Apps Make It Easier For High School Students to Connect With Colleges This summer, rising high school seniors can explore colleges without having to leave the comfort of their homes. Though most students conduct their preliminary college research on the collegeââ¬â¢s websites, social media is becoming a more popular avenue to explore when gaining insight into a campusââ¬â¢s culture, offerings, and student life.More colleges are utilizing social media platforms like Periscope, Meerkat, Snapchat, Instagram, and more to give students another view of college life at that institution, and itââ¬â¢s working. Nearly 2/3 of students use social media to research colleges, and 3/4 of them find it influential. Some colleges, like Cornell, are even developing their own social networks in an effort to encourage admitted students to enroll. But is this useful? Absolutely! How Social Media Benefits the College Search ProcessCollege-bound students are more connected than ever and colleges know this. Gone are the days when students would buy big college guidebook s to explore potential schools. Now, everything is online and increasingly more social. According to NACACââ¬â¢s most recent State of College Admissions report, 96% of colleges reported using social media in their recruitment efforts, up from 39% in 2008.Social media is a great tool for students to use when researching colleges because it allows them to get a better ââ¬Å"insideâ⬠look at a campus and its culture. Twitter and Facebook are great for keeping students informed about campus news, events, and any relevant admissions information. More visual outlets like Instagram, Snapchat, Periscope, Meerkat, and Tumblr help students paint a picture of a school and its campus, making it easier to actually see parts of the campus and help students envision themselves there.Social media also helps students stay informed during the admissions process. Accounts frequently post updates about deadlines, application questions, and more. This is a valuable tool to make sure applicants are on top of everything and know about any important changes that might affect their application. What to Look ForOther perspectives. When researching colleges on social media, look for things outside of whatââ¬â¢s readily available on that collegeââ¬â¢s website or official social media accounts. Follow hashtags related to the college to see what others are posting. Follow different academic departments and organizations of interest to see what theyââ¬â¢re doing and how they connect with students.News and current events. Keep track of campus news and search Facebook, Twitter, or YikYak to see what actual students are saying about current events. Sometimes this can be a good way to get some insight into how students feel about things like campus culture, safety, and other parts of the college experience that might not be highlighted on a schoolââ¬â¢s site. What to IgnoreNegativity. There are a lot of voices on social media, and some can be louder than others. Donââ¬â¢t let a few negative comments by one poster deter you from a school that might otherwise be a good fit. If you come across something that you have concerns about, reach out to a current student you might already know there or another student liaison and talk about it.First impressions of photos. Donââ¬â¢t let a schoolââ¬â¢s Instagram account alone sell you on that institution. Photos can be altered, touched up, and filtered to look most appealing, and while many campuses have beautiful grounds, buildings, and more, donââ¬â¢t let the images alone influence your decision. This goes both ways. If a school isnââ¬â¢t so pretty in photos, donââ¬â¢t let that influence your decision either. The best way to really get a feel for a campus is to visit, so while going through photos online can be a great way to develop a mental picture of you on campus, itââ¬â¢s not the only thing to consider.

The Effects Of Climate Change On The World - 1609 Words
With climate change being upon us, the time to act is now. Evidence of drastic climate changes include the following: record low polar ice caps during the summer of 2012, record drought in California, excessive flooding in the eastern half of Texas and record heat in India. This is all evidence of what our ââ¬Å"normalâ⬠climate will be like in the future. If we donââ¬â¢t act right now, we will live in a world where cities along the coast like Miami, New York and New Orleans will be partially underwater. Record breaking heatwaves like the Chicago Heatwave of 1995 and the European Heatwave during the summer of 2003 will become a normal occurrence. Furthermore, polar bears will become extinct, since there will be little to no ice in the arctic during the next few years and decades. Therefore, we must be cautious of the actions that we take right now, since the future of our planet is heavily dependent on it. Increased burning of fossil fuels and rising greenhouse gases have bo th boosted the rate of climate change to unprecedented lengths that we have never seen before. If we donââ¬â¢t reduce greenhouse gases, we will live in a world that is ââ¬Å"anywhere from 1.8C (3.24F) warmer (low emissions scenario) to 4C (7.2F) warmer (high emissions scenario) by 2050.â⬠(Freeman Guzman 1545) Either way, coastal regions will have to cope with rising sea levels, receding coastlines and flooding that could endanger the lives of many. The Screening I Attended Called Packed Through A Trunk ...
The screening I attended called ââ¬Å"Packed in a Trunk: The Lost Art of Edith Lake Wilkinsonâ⬠was based during the early 20th century. It was about a woman artist named Edith Lake Wilkinson, who was sent to an insane asylum and no longer heard of thereafter. Jane Anderson, her great-niece, who documented her findings and research on Edith was influenced at a very early age by Edithââ¬â¢s art which was present all through her home. It also talked about how Edith had a companion named Fannie which was most likely her partner therefore, indicating that Edith was gay. The Wilkinson family s lawyer, who was in charge of their estate was suspecting of Edithââ¬â¢s relationship in a letter that he gave her saying it was not wise for them to be so close. As a result, he separated them and eventually stole her inheritance by sending her to an insane asylum. The purpose of Jane Anderson was to rescue all of Edithââ¬â¢s work and return it to her hometown, Provincetown. This event is relevant to policies regarding lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) rights such as same-sex marriage and discrimination against sexual orientation or gender. Jane Andersonââ¬â¢s great aunt, Edith who was a lesbian was living a life hidden from society in which being gay was not only prohibited, but it was also suppressed. This prejudice was apparent given the fact that she was judged by her family s lawyer of being gay and it was easier for him to deceivingly institute her in an insane asylum. This specific example

Essay about Racial Profiling after 9/11 - 499 Words
It has been 3 years since the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center Towers on September 11, 2001. After two commercial airplanes were hijacked by members of the Al-Qaeda, both planes plundered through the towers, leaving nothing but the remains of the collapsed towers. Devastated by the thousands and maybe millions of people that were killed, America was under attack by terrorists. Al-Qaeda is a well-known global terrorist network that originated in Islam and is led by the man name Osama bin Laden. Investigating The Rise Of The Nazi Party During The Weimar...
In this literature the authors (King, Rosen, Tanner, Wagner 2008) explore the voting behavior in order to explain the rise of the Nazi Party during the Weimar Republic and who turned to the Nazis and who didnââ¬â¢t. Some of the literatureââ¬â¢s arguments there are two theories mentioned, the first one being group-based theory and the second one the Catchall theory. Alternative arguments to this suggest that those who were hurt by the economy and had little risk of unemployment labeled in the readings as the working poor supported the Nazi Party. This group of people disliked the on-going welfare programs from the current government and were seeking for economic stability, new capital goods and more. In contrast those who were unemployed or at high risk of becoming unemployed were in favor of the Communist Party or Zentrum Party, these people were against the Nazi party mainly because they were already benefiting from the different kinds of social assistants and the Nazi polici es did not favor the average peasant workers. The data shown in the essay covers elections from December 1924 to March 1933, after having a set of 681 precincts that were stable. This is divided into six regions, each showing 3 different levels of unemployment (low, middle and high) as well as religious affiliation (Protestants and Catholics plus a couple of others).
